August 31–September 4, 2026
Markets head into September with the labor market and the Fed rate debate back in control. Friday’s August jobs report comes after payrolls unexpectedly fell by 23,000 in July, while JOLTS, ADP and both ISM surveys will give traders several checkpoints before then. Broadcom leads another batch of tech earnings, with Dell, Palo Alto Networks, Snowflake and HPE also on deck.

Why This Week Matters
Fed Chair Kevin Warsh changed the setup at Jackson Hole. His insistence that the Fed still has “work to do” if inflation does not move toward 2% pushed the market-implied probability of a September rate hike to roughly 57% late Friday. Economists expect August payrolls to rebound by about 58,000 with unemployment holding at 4.1%, making Friday’s report a test of that newly hawkish rate outlook.
The market will not have to wait until Friday for clues. JOLTS comes Tuesday, ADP on Wednesday and jobless claims Thursday, while the ISM manufacturing and services reports will show whether economic activity is holding up as the Fed weighs another move. The Beige Book on Wednesday adds one more look at hiring, prices and business conditions across the Fed’s districts.
Broadcom follows Nvidia’s strong report which kept the AI infrastructure trade moving. Dell and HPE offer another read on AI server demand, while Snowflake, Palo Alto Networks and Zscaler put enterprise software and cybersecurity back in focus. Five Below and Lululemon should also give traders another look at the consumer as earnings season winds down.
