Why This Week Matters

The pressure on tech stocks intensified into the end of October as concerns over AI spending and valuations weighed on investor sentiment. The S&P 500 lost 1.8% on Friday, marking its worst session since June, as Intel plunged nearly 29% following a weaker-than-expected outlook and Amazon's results renewed questions about the cost of building out AI infrastructure.

Apple, Palantir, AMD and Qualcomm are among the companies reporting this week, giving investors another opportunity to assess tech demand, growth expectations and the returns on AI investment.

The economic calendar builds toward Friday's October employment report, with nonfarm payrolls, average hourly earnings and the unemployment rate all due at 8:30 a.m. ET. Before then, Monday brings the ISM manufacturing index, followed by September job openings and factory orders on Tuesday. ADP employment and the ISM services index arrive Wednesday, while Thursday's calendar includes third-quarter productivity and unit labor costs alongside weekly jobless claims.

The data will help investors assess the health of the labor market and broader economy as they consider the Federal Reserve's next move. Meanwhile, voters head to the polls Tuesday for the U.S. midterm elections, with control of Congress at stake and potential implications for AI policy.
