Bears seized control during Friday’s session and sent the S&P 500 index futures plunging with a sharp selloff, maintaining the index’s propensity to finish the week at an extreme end of the range.

Overnight, the high of 7591 was put in immediately as sellers extended Thursday’s after-hours decline. For the rest of the overnight and premarket hours, bulls defended support near the 7550 area and attempted a couple of recovery rallies, but they failed to gain traction.

May’s jobs report delivered a headline beat on jobs added with unemployment holding steady, yet a deeper look revealed cracks beneath the surface – read more here. Sellers quickly took over and the regular session opened near the premarket low. Bulls tried to hold support in the early minutes, but bears swiftly took command. Support near the psychological 7500 level, which aligned with last week’s low, briefly held before giving way before lunch. Another early afternoon stand by the bulls near 7450 crumbled in the penultimate hour.

The decline accelerated past the psychological 7400 level as the close neared, though dip-buyers stepped in during the final half hour to reclaim that mark in choppy action. The session concluded near the intraday low at 7400.50, a swoon of 200.50 handles. For the week, that makes for a loss of 195.25 handles, or 2.57%. After hours, the selling continued, pushing futures to a new low of 7359.

Monday, market participants can look forward to a few earnings reports, mostly from small and mid-cap issues.

Among the top components of the index, Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE: BRK.B) emerged as the biggest gainer as market participants flocked to safety. The holding company advanced by $9.50 or 1.98% to close at $488.13 for the day.

That performance was over four percent better than the cash index’s decline of 2.58%.

For the second day in a row following its latest earnings report, the biggest loser was Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO). The chip designer declined by another $33.18 or 7.92% to close at $385.73.
