Why This Week Matters

The economic calendar is light, leaving earnings and geopolitical headlines to drive more of the tape. Friday’s preliminary PMI readings will give traders a look at business activity, hiring and price pressure ahead of the Federal Reserve’s July 29 decision. Weekly jobless claims and new home sales offer smaller checks on the labor and housing markets.

Alphabet may be the biggest report of the week, with traders watching Search, Cloud and AI spending after the recent pullback in chip stocks raised questions about how far the infrastructure trade had run. Reuters noted that any reduction in Alphabet’s AI capital spending plans could ripple across semiconductors and other companies tied to the buildout. Intel and Texas Instruments will provide another read on the chip trade after the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index fell more than 20% from its late-June high.

Tesla reports Wednesday after already disclosing more than 480,000 second-quarter deliveries. Investors will be looking past the delivery number toward margins, spending and Elon Musk’s plans for robotics, autonomy and AI. Outside earnings, the Middle East remains part of the setup as renewed fighting involving Iran has lifted oil and revived concern that another energy spike could complicate the inflation outlook just before the Fed meets.
