The S&P 500 index futures lost some ground during Tuesday’s session, but buy-the-dippers helped the day finish far from the lows.
Overnight, bulls slowly lost ground to bears and profit-takers from an early high of 7443.75, despite several attempts to buy the dip. Another pop came once the latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) was released. The data came in mostly at or slightly above expectations (3.8% versus 3.7% expected YoY). Bulls rallied up from the psychological 7400 level, but once the opening bell rang, sellers took back control.
The decline continued with only small bouts of pushback from the bulls. Support was found at Thursday’s low, with the action turning to chop just above that level setting the bottom at 7363.25. It wasn’t until after lunch that selling pressure let up. From there, bulls stepped in to buy the dip and sustain a rally. They nearly reached the overnight high, but sellers prevented a green close with a small last-minute selloff. The session concluded in the upper half of the day’s range at 7426.50, losing 10.25 handles.
Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to April’s PPI report, along with another round of earnings reports in the morning and evening.
Among the top components of the index, Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) emerged as the biggest gainer. The retail giant was able to advance by $2.76 or 2.16% to close at $130.35 for the day.
That performance was over two percent better than the cash index’s decline of 0.15%.
Flipping its role from Monday, the biggest loser ended up being Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA). For the day, the AI/EV company declined by $11.63 or 2.61% to close at $433.45.
