The S&P 500 index futures took traders on a rollercoaster ride Wednesday, whipping between sharp selloffs and recovery rallies before settling close to unchanged.

Overnight, bears slowly exerted pressure on the index futures, dragging them ever closer to the psychological 7500 level by the early morning hours. Just before the open, a morning Trump post escalating US-Iran tensions handed bears some fresh fodder, and they briefly forced the index futures to a new low of 7504. The dip was immediately bought up, and once the opening bell rang, bulls followed through with a recovery rally.

After reaching the double-top at Monday and Tuesday’s highs, the bulls seemed to fully turn into profit-takers, and the index futures were promptly taken back into the red. The selloff didn’t last too long, as buyers rebounded just above the daily pivot then extended the morning rally to new highs. The advance slowed once it cleared the recent double-top, plateauing at a high of 7563.50 over the lunch hour. The afternoon belonged to the bears and profit-takers, who dragged the index futures into the red once again in the final hour. The session concluded with some whipsaw action, closing slightly above the day’s midpoint at 7540.25, losing a mere 5.50 handles.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to another slew of earnings reports in both the morning and evening.

Among the top components of the index, Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO) emerged as the biggest gainer. The chip designer advanced by $10.31 or 2.67% to close at $396.81 for the day.

That performance was nearly 3% better than the cash index’s decline of 0.12%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META). For the day, the tech conglomerate declined by $16.64 or 2.58% to close at $627.17.
