Bulls broke a three-day losing streak on Wednesday and lifted the S&P 500 index futures in a green session, setting the stage just ahead of top-component chip earnings from Broadcom after the close.
Overnight, bears extended a bit of the pressure seen from Tuesday’s session, eventually dragging the index futures to a morning low of 7618.50, a level that also marked a double-bottom with Tuesday’s low. From that point, buy-the-dippers went to work and had recovered all of the losses by the time the regular session began.
Off the opening bell, once the first half hour of chop settled, bulls ran away with a rally. The buying went uncontested until the 7690 area, soon topping out at a high of 7691.25. After it became clear that resistance would hold, some bulls took profits and only a few other sellers piled on. For much of the afternoon, the action settled into fairly muted chop in the 7670’s. The session concluded in the upper half of the day’s range at 7676.50, gaining 33.75 handles.
Thursday, market participants can look forward to July’s US trade balance at 8:30 AM ET along with a few other macro data points in the morning, plus a handful of earnings reports both before the open and after the close.
Among the top components of the index, NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ: NVDA) emerged as the biggest gainer. The chip designer advanced by $6.97 or 3.21% to close at $224.41 for the day.
That performance was a magnificent seven times better than the cash index’s advance of 0.44%.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT). For the day, the tech giant declined by $4.20 or 0.84% to close at $496.82.
