The S&P 500 took a breather Tuesday after Monday’s sharp rally, with the index declining 0.02% as investors digested ongoing geopolitical developments and strength in technology stocks. The December S&P 500 futures contract opened at 7,830.00, compared with Monday’s 7,833.50 settlement.

The overnight session held in a narrow range as investors weighed easing oil prices, developments surrounding Iran and continued strength in technology shares. S&P 500 futures traded as high as 7,848.50 and as low as 7,810.50.

The session concluded near the midpoint of the day’s range at 7,827.25, losing 6.25 handles from the prior settlement of 7,833.50.

Among the top components of the index, Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) emerged as the biggest gainer. The retail giant was able to advance by $2.68, or 2.49%, to close at $110.12 for the day.

That performance was more than 2 percentage points better than the cash index’s decline of 0.02%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN). For the day, the e-commerce giant declined by $3.47, or 1.34%, to close at $254.98.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to earnings from Cintas (CTAS), Paychex (PAYX) and General Mills (GS), along with the latest U.S. flash manufacturing and services PMI data.
