Wednesday kicked off the third quarter with a light back-and-forth session in the S&P 500 index futures, as bulls spent the day clawing back an overnight dip only to surrender a sliver of ground into the close.

Overnight, bears set the tone early, slowly working the index futures lower toward the psychological 7500 level. They never quite reached it before buy-the-dippers stepped in to start the recovery. The regular session opened near the premarket low, and in the opening volatility, sellers pressed the index futures down to a low of 7505.25. Bulls came right back to buy the dip and then some, dragging the index futures back to unchanged. After a brief pause near that area, they resumed the rally higher.

The advance began to top out above Tuesday’s high before stalling soon after. Following several attempts to break through resistance, bulls tipped the high to 7579 before the bids started to give way. Support held above unchanged for most of the afternoon, but in the final half hour, bears hit back. The session concluded below the day’s midpoint at 7543.50, losing 4.75 handles.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to June’s jobs report at 8:30 AM ET, along with some synthetic end-of-week action, as Friday’s markets are closed for Independence Day, and a handful of earnings reports in the morning and evening.

Among the top components of the index, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META) emerged as the biggest gainer. The tech conglomerate advanced by $49.62 or 8.81% to close at $612.91 for the day.

That performance was nearly nine percent better than the cash index’s decline of 0.14%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT). For the day, the retail giant declined by $4.44 or 3.92% to close at $108.82.
