The S&P 500 index futures hit both resistance and support Monday after a bearish weekend, with bulls defending support and bears capping upside near Friday’s close for only a slight decline.

Sunday night trading opened at the lows and quickly bottomed at 7085 amid US-Iran tension jitters. Bulls slowly climbed from there, and by the regular session open, had crawled nearly into the green. After the bell they pushed a choppy rally to a high of 7160.50 near Friday’s close, but resistance held firm. Bears flushed the index down to the 7120 area before bulls bought the dip and staged another slow rally back toward the regular session open level.

Bulls were unable to break resistance near the opening area in the afternoon, but didn’t give up much ground either. The session closed somewhat near the day’s high at 7148, down 13.50 handles.

Tuesday brings some minor macro data and a slew of earnings reports in the morning and evening.

Among the top components of the index, Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) stood out as the biggest gainer, climbing $2.82 or 1.04% to close at $273.05. After hours saw more volatility in the name after CEO Tim Cook announced he is stepping down to become Apple’s Executive Chairman with John Ternus named as the company’s new CEO.

That performance was over one percent better than the cash index’s 0.20% decline.

Conversely, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META) was the biggest loser, falling $17.64 or 2.56% to close at $670.91.
