The S&P 500 index futures ended a rocky week with yet another volatile, but all-green session. Bulls pushed close to all-time highs early on but ultimately finished the day with bears in control.
Overnight, bulls and bears went back and forth before bulls took the reins, keeping the session entirely in the green with a low of 7466.75 and lifting the index into the 7500 handle by morning. The regular session kicked off with a sharp rally from bulls, only to run into stiff resistance that led to selling pressure. Light consumer expectations and sentiment data seemed to add fuel for the bears. Support formed just below Thursday’s high, allowing bulls to mount a rebound.
In the afternoon, both sides picked up intensity around the psychological 7500 level, with bulls holding support. Reports on upcoming US trade agreements, related meetings, and other geopolitical headlines helped drive more volatility, with bulls surging to a high of 7524. Those gains proved short-lived as profit-takers and sellers returned aggressively, especially on fresh Iran-related news.
Bulls could not mount a counter, and sellers broke through 7500 support in the final hour, sparking a light decline into the close. The session concluded just below the day’s midpoint at 7491, gaining 25 handles. For the week, the index posted a modest gain of 58.75 handles or 0.79%.
Due to the Memorial Day long weekend, markets are closed Monday. Tuesday, market participants can look forward to some minor macro data in the morning along with a light earnings slate before and after the open.
Among the top components of the index, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) emerged as the biggest gainer. The AI/EV company advanced by $8.16 or 1.95% to close at $426.01 for the day.
That performance was a fabulous five times better than the cash index’s advance of 0.39 percent.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ: NVDA) after its latest earnings report. For the day, the chip designer declined by $4.18 or 1.90% to close at $215.33.
