Bulls finally broke through recent resistance on Friday in the S&P 500 index futures, powering to fresh monthly highs and returning to their propensity to finish the week on an extreme end of its range. Though not before jolts of US-Iran drama rattled the tape.

Overnight, the action stayed fairly quiet, with bears holding minor pressure and keeping the index futures in red territory for the majority of the night. In the morning, bulls found aid from reports of a Qatari meeting with officials in Iran, discussing progress surrounding US-Iran relations.

The regular session opened slightly green, and in a choppy open, bulls went to test resistance around the 7600 area. Bulls and bears both struggled for control, but that was about to change. Reports of Trump saying Iran had asked to continue talks, as well as the US stating that the cease fire was over, had bears spring into action. Sellers sharply drew the index futures into the red, quickly hitting a new low of 7552.75. Buy-the-dippers sprang into action right away, bringing the index futures back into the green within minutes. Following the sharp move, bulls and bears once again struggled for control, oscillating unchanged.

After testing resistance at the morning’s high, bulls had to hold support at Thursday’s close one last time before bears gave way and a rally followed. The rally continued to new highs after noon slowly and steadily, with volatility practically disappearing. The rally slowed in the final hour, but bulls ticked to a new high of 7628.75 in the final minutes before some slight profit-taking. The session concluded near the day’s high at 7620.75, gaining 31.50 handles. For the week, that marks a 100.50-handle gain, or 1.33%.

Monday, market participants can look forward to some minor fedspeak and June’s US federal budget in the afternoon, along with a couple of minor earnings reports, mostly after the close.

Among the top components of the index, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META) emerged as the biggest gainer for the second day in a row. The tech conglomerate advanced by $37.73 or 5.97% to close at $669.21 for the day.

That performance was a lucky 13 times better than the cash index’s advance of 0.43%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN). For the day, the e-commerce giant declined by $1.70 or 0.69% to close at $245.34.
