Daily Wrap-Up: Flying Around | May 21, 2026

Even though bulls ended Thursday’s session with a small gain in the S&P 500 index futures, the intraday action was a different story.

Overnight, sellers initially continued the after-hours pressure following NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ: NVDA)’s latest quarterly report. However, bulls quickly found support and bottomed at 7407.50. Once they built a solid base of bids, they slowly climbed back toward Wednesday’s high. After fending off some sellers, bulls broke through that level, only to face fresh pressure from bears, helped along by reports of Iran ordering near-weapons grade uranium to remain in the country.

Bulls found themselves defending the premarket low once again as the regular session began. Volatility picked up, but neither side could gain clear control for much of the morning. In the afternoon, news of SpaceX filing for an IPO at a massive $1.75 trillion valuation excited bulls, sparking a breakout that reached a high of 7486.75. Profit-takers and bears soon regained the upper hand, pushing the index back into the red, partly on renewed US-Iran tension headlines.

Bulls fought back by the final hour, reclaiming green territory where the action settled. The session concluded somewhat near the day’s high at 7466, gaining 14.25 handles.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to some minor macro data after the open and a light earnings slate, most of which will come out before the open.

Among the top components of the index, Amazon.com Inc (NASDAQ: AMZN) emerged as the biggest gainer. The e-commerce giant advanced by $3.45 or 1.30% to close at $268.46 for the day.

That performance was over six times better than the cash index’s advance of 0.20 percent.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT), following its latest earnings release which included a slight top-line beat but lowered guidance. For the day, the retail giant declined by $9.51 or 7.27% to close at $121.34.
