Friday’s session delivered yet another back-and-forth battle in the S&P 500 index futures, with the index mostly grinding higher in the absence of major negative headlines.
Overnight, bulls and bears traded blows above and below the 7400 level while staying mostly in the green. As the regular session approached, bears seized the upper hand. Sellers struck hard off the opening bell, breaching the premarket low and driving the index futures down to 7366.50. Bulls quickly formed support and unleashed a sharp rally that reclaimed green territory, though it stalled just above unchanged.
The real spark came once trading in Space Exploration Technologies Corp. (NASDAQ: SPCX) began. A powerful rally in that name spilled over into the broader market, helping propel the index futures to new highs and a peak of 7461.75. Profit-takers soon hit back with a sharp selloff, but support held firmly at the psychological 7400 level. Bulls stabilized the action just above Thursday’s high, and the index futures settled into chop for much of the afternoon.
The session concluded in the upper half of the day’s range at 7435, gaining 39 handles. For the week, that adds up to a modest gain of 34.50 handles, or 0.47%.
Monday, market participants can look forward to a few minor earnings reports in the morning and evening.
Among the top components of the index, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) emerged as the biggest gainer for the second day in a row. The AI/EV company advanced by $7.28 or 1.82% to close at $406.43 for the day.
That performance was over three times the cash index’s advance of 0.54%.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL). For the day, the tech giant declined by $4.50 or 1.52% to close at $291.13.
