The S&P 500 index futures went another leg lower during Tuesday’s session, with both bulls and bears getting their time in the sun.

Overnight, bears seized the upper hand right away, capping the high at 7440.75 and driving a steady decline from there. Despite some counter rallies, the regular session opened in the red under the psychological 7400 level. After a few more tests in that area, resistance held firm. Bears pushed to a new low of 7354.25 before the decline halted.

Bulls quickly built a base just above that low and launched a smooth recovery that reached the 7415 area. That level marked another turning point, and bears took control for the remainder of the day. As the close approached, it looked like the bears would probe the lows again, but bulls stepped in during the final minutes to defend. The session concluded below the day’s midpoint at 7378, losing 47.75 handles.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to the release of the May FOMC meeting minutes at 2:00 PM ET, along with a heavy slate of earnings reports in the morning and evening, including NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ: NVDA) after the close.

Among the top components of the index, Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) emerged as the biggest gainer. The retail giant advanced by $0.86 or 0.64% to close at $134.20, making new all-time highs in the process.

That performance was over one percent better than the cash index’s decline of 0.67 percent.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOGL). For the day, the tech giant declined by $9.28 or 2.34% to close at $387.66.
