Bulls took back control during Thursday’s session in the S&P 500 index futures as reports of potential relief in the Iran-related conflict circulated.
Overnight, bulls and bears traded blows with neither party holding any significant rally or selloff. The low was set in the morning at 7524.50 and bulls initiated a rally from that point. Volatility picked up after the opening bell but a choppy rally continued nonetheless. Resistance at Wednesday’s close held for a while, but not for too long. Once bulls broke through that level they were off to the races.
The rally continued fairly steadily into the afternoon all the way to a high of 7611.50. Profit-takers and bears only came in during the final half hour, paring some of the gains and continuing a selloff after hours. The session concluded near the day’s high at 7601 gaining 29.25 handles.
Tomorrow market participants can look forward to May’s jobs report at 8:30 AM ET and a light earnings slate in the morning.
Among the top components of the index, Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG) emerged as the biggest gainer. The tech giant was able to advance by $13.59 or 3.82 percent to close at $369.27 for the day.
That performance was an order of magnitude better than the cash index’s advance of 0.38 percent.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO) after releasing its latest quarterly earnings report after hours Wednesday. After a slight miss on the top-line, beat on the bottom-line and forecasted growth not meeting high expectations, some investors headed for the exit. For the day the chip designer declined by $60.32 or 12.59 percent to close at $418.91.
