Daily Wrap-Up: Back to Taking Profits | Jun 16, 2026

Profit-takers and bears reasserted control on Tuesday, turning an inside day in the S&P 500 index futures into a steady afternoon grind to fresh session lows.

The session got off to a shaky start overnight, with an initial selloff before buy-the-dippers stepped in to scoop up…dips. There was no clear rally to be found, however, and the bulls were barely able to cling to green territory by morning after a modest overnight lift.

The regular session began near the premarket high, and buyers came out swinging with a quick sweep of offers, driving the index futures to a high of 7636.75 within minutes before resistance held firm. After some initial chop below that level, bids began to give way and the index futures plunged back into the red. Bulls dug in to defend the psychological 7600 level, and for most of the session it appeared support would hold. But with consistently lower highs rolling into the afternoon, the decline accelerated in the final hour to new lows. The session concluded near the day’s low at 7587.25, losing 39.25 handles. After hours, the low was pushed slightly lower to 7578.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to May’s retail report at 8:30 AM ET and the latest FOMC interest-rate decision at 2:30 PM ET, followed by a press conference from Fed Chair Warsh and a small handful of earnings reports in the morning and evening.

Among the top components of the index, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META) emerged as the biggest gainer. The tech conglomerate advanced by $6.73 or 1.13% to close at $600.21 for the day.

That performance was over one percent better than the cash index’s decline of 0.60%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO). For the day, the chip designer declined by $17.23 or 4.37% to close at $376.71.
