The S&P 500 index futures posted another solid green day Tuesday, climbing back above the psychological 7000 level on lighter-than-expected PPI data and continued bullish momentum.
Overnight, bulls held bids steady with an early low at 6920.25. Index futures already surpassed Monday’s high by morning, then March’s PPI report came in notably softer than expected at 0.5% versus 1.1% consensus. The initial pop was sold, but bulls resumed the rally right after the opening bell. Aside from a few brief pauses, the advance faced little resistance for most of the day.
Bears and profit-takers finally stepped in during the afternoon near 7000, before a short round of selling gave way to another push that printed a new high of 7008 in the final hour. The session closed near the day’s high at 7004.75, up 82 handles.
Wednesday brings March’s import price index along with a few other minor macro releases, and another load of earnings reports in the morning and evening.
Among the top components of the index, Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META) stood out as the biggest gainer, surging $27.96 or 4.41% to close at $662.49.
That performance was over three times better than the cash index’s 1.22% advance.
Conversely, Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE: BRK.B) was the biggest loser, falling $2.64 or 0.55% to close at $477.54.
