The S&P 500 index futures took a step back Tuesday, consolidating just underneath the all-time high with bears holding resistance at that level and bulls holding support near other recent levels.

Overnight, bulls held a modest uplift and hit a high of 7183 by morning, forming a double-top near the all-time high. Optimism faded by the regular session. After the opening bell, bulls and bears traded blows, initially favoring bulls before bids eroded. Once Monday’s close broke, support continued to give way. In the afternoon, bulls found some support near the psychological 7100 area. Reports of US-Iran peace talks falling through helped trigger a flush to a low of 7085, forming a perfect double-bottom with Monday’s low.

The session closed somewhat near the day’s low at 7100, down 48 handles. After hours, a Trump post about the US extending the ceasefire deadline helped bulls recover some of the losses.

Wednesday brings another load of earnings reports in the morning and evening, including Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) after the close.

Among the top components of the index, Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT) stood out as the biggest gainer, climbing $6.09 or 1.46% to close at $424.16.

That performance was over two percent better than the cash index’s 0.65% decline.

Conversely, Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) flipped its role from Monday and was the biggest loser after the announcement of Tim Cook stepping down as CEO later this year, falling $6.88 or 2.52% to close at $266.17.
