Bears seized control during Friday’s session and drove the S&P 500 index futures another leg lower, breaking out of the recent tight range while still holding within July’s broader bounds, and capping yet another week that finished on an extreme end of the range.
The high of 7575 was set right away in the overnight session, with bears definitively ruling the early action and forcing an initial selloff toward the psychological 7500 area. Bulls managed to find support near there and largely held that zone into the regular session open. Given it was an options expiration Friday, morning volatility picked up sharply, and bears carved out a low of 7473 within minutes of the open.
Bulls held firm right at that low, and after a few tests of the level they launched their comeback rally. A sharp round of buying took the index futures straight up, but the move topped out just below Thursday’s low. Resistance held near 7540, and much of the afternoon was spent bouncing between that level and the 7500 zone, with sellers defending very firmly.
In the final hour, bears began to break support, though bulls gave them a run for their shorts as the close approached. The session concluded with selling below the day’s midpoint at 7497.75, losing 80 handles. For the week, that makes for a decline of 122.50 handles or 1.61%.
Monday, market participants can look forward to June’s US federal budget at 2 PM ET, along with a big earnings week kicking off with plenty of reports in the morning and evening.
Among the top components of the index, Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) emerged as the biggest gainer yet again after a choppy session for the issue. The tech giant advanced by $0.48 or 0.14% to close at $333.74 for the day, making new all-time highs in the process.
That performance was over 1% better than the cash index’s decline of 0.99%.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Meta Platforms Inc (NASDAQ: META). For the day, the tech conglomerate declined by $18.53 or 2.79% to close at $646.01.
