The S&P 500 rose for the first time in four sessions on Thursday, with the cash index advancing 0.33% to 7,744.06. The gain snapped a three-session losing streak as strength in healthcare and consumer stocks helped offset continued weakness in the semiconductor sector.

December S&P 500 futures traded as high as 7,801.25 and as low as 7,718.25. The session concluded near the day’s high at 7,789.25, above the midpoint of 7,759.75 and gaining 19.00 handles from the prior close of 7,770.25.

Investors also assessed third-quarter results from Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co. (NYSE: TSM) . TSMC reported record quarterly profit, up 69% year over year, but its shares fell 1.80%.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to September industrial production and capacity utilization data, both scheduled for 9:15 a.m. ET.

Among the top components of the index, Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) emerged as the biggest gainer. The retail giant advanced by $1.71, or 1.47%, to close at $117.87 for the day.

That performance outpaced the cash index by 1.14 percentage points.
