Bulls flew a little too close to the sun on Wednesday, notching fresh all-time highs in the S&P 500 index futures before a lack of positive headlines surrounding the US-Iran conflict sapped their recent momentum.

Overnight, bulls started to bid up the index futures, carving out new all-time highs in the process. The regular session opened virtually at the premarket high, but it was chop that took over the action. Bulls and bears battled it out, with an all-time high soon set at 7820.25. Resistance remained firm at that level, despite bulls’ repeated tests.

After the first hour, bulls started to lose their footing, and profit-takers and other sellers took over. A choppy decline ensued, until bulls found their footing near the 7750 area. Over the lunch hour, bulls clawed back green territory, but the advance didn’t continue much past that. It was only in the final few minutes that bids were swept out, with sellers carving a new low of 7745.75. Once the dust settled, the session concluded near the day’s low at 7749.50, losing 16 handles.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to Q2’s US productivity report at 8:30 AM ET, along with a few more earnings reports in the morning and evening.

Among the top components of the index, NVIDIA Corp (NASDAQ: NVDA) emerged as the biggest gainer. The chip designer advanced by $7.28 or 3.43% to close at $219.22 for the day.

That performance was over 3% better than the cash index’s decline of 0.20%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG). For the day, the tech giant declined by $15.22 or 4.05% to close at $360.13.
