Why This Week Matters
The Fed passed on a rate increase last week, but three officials wanted one. That puts the labor market in the middle of the September debate as JOLTS, ADP and jobless claims will build the case through the week, but Friday’s payroll report is the one that can move rate expectations.
The earnings calendar will also test the market’s appetite for AI. Palantir starts the week, followed by AMD, Arista and SpaceX on Tuesday. Investors will be looking beyond headline growth for evidence that demand is keeping pace with the money pouring into chips, data centers and AI infrastructure.
The rest of the slate reaches beyond tech, with Caterpillar giving investors a read on industrial spending, while McDonald’s, Disney, Uber and Airbnb will show where consumers are still spending. Eli Lilly brings the weight-loss drug trade back into focus, and energy results arrive as the Middle East remains a risk for oil and inflation.
