Bears kept the pressure on through most of Thursday’s session, though the S&P 500 index futures still didn’t manage to escape their recent consolidation range.
Overnight, bulls and bears fought to a standstill initially, with resistance near Wednesday’s high holding firm and setting the day’s high at 7632. Once that peak was in, bears took over and initiated a choppy decline. The regular session began with sellers pressing the index futures to new lows, but bulls picked up the dip near the premarket low and mounted a recovery.
The rally slowed after the morning’s macro data finished being released, with support holding at 7600 while resistance remained firm right above that area. Support started to falter in the afternoon, and in the penultimate hour, bears were back making new lows. The selling accelerated into the close, dragging the index futures down to a low of 7548.25, until closing imbalances were released and buy-the-dippers bounced back in the final 10 minutes. The session concluded below the day’s midpoint at 7577.75, losing 37 handles.
Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to June’s Import Price index data at 8:30 AM ET, along with a few other macro data points in the morning and some more earnings reports, mostly arriving in the morning.
Among the top components of the index, Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT) emerged as the biggest gainer. The retail giant advanced by $2.42 or 2.15% to close at $114.95 for the day.
That performance was over 2% better than the cash index’s decline of 0.54%.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO). For the day, the chip designer declined by $19.83 or 5.03% to close at $374.45.
