Bulls took the reins on Tuesday and sent the S&P 500 index futures mostly higher on the final day of the month and quarter, with market participants busy dressing up their portfolios into the close. No major geopolitical headline headwinds also seemed to help the bull-case.

The overnight action stayed fairly muted. The index futures set an early low of 7481.75 and oscillated around the psychological 7500 level, which also coincided with Monday’s close and several recent daily highs. The regular session opened in this same area, and despite a bit of chop off the bat, the bulls easily sustained higher lows before rallying to break through the premarket high.

Sellers leaned in above that premarket high, but when the bears went to retest the level after the opening hour, resistance had turned into support and the tide shifted decisively back toward the bulls yet again. The bulls sustained the rally through the lunch hour and into the afternoon, slowing only in the penultimate hour. After tagging a high of 7567.75, bears and profit-takers hit back during the final 45 minutes, especially once the closing imbalances were out.

The session concluded above the day’s midpoint at 7548.25, gaining 48 handles. For the month, that still leaves a loss of 89.75 handles or 1.17% in the front-month contract, while for the quarter it marks a healthy gain of 947.75 handles or 14.3%.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to a speech by new Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at the opening bell, some manufacturing data and other minor macro data points in the morning, along with more earnings reports morning and evening.

Among the top components of the index, Apple Inc (NASDAQ: AAPL) emerged as the biggest gainer. The tech giant advanced by $7.62 or 2.70% to close at $289.36 for the day.

That performance was over three times the cash index’s advance of 0.78%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT). For the day, the retail giant declined by $1.34 or 1.17% to close at $113.26.
