US-Iran tensions returned to the forefront of traders’ minds during Monday’s session in the S&P 500 index futures, with bears taking advantage of an initial pop to win the day.
Overnight, bulls fought their way up from an early low of 7513. Just before pushing into the green, early-morning reports of “good progress” being made on Iran talks helped bulls with a modest uplift.
The regular session began in the green, and bulls started to pull away, nearing the psychological 7600 level. After some fast chop and whipsaw moves, bulls topped out at a high of 7599.25 before bids gave way right after. A sharp decline took the index futures back into the 7540’s, and the action turned to chop in that area for the rest of the day, with bulls holding the intraday low above the overnight low. The session concluded below the day’s midpoint at 7541.25, losing 29.50 handles.
Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to June’s S&P flash U.S. PMI data at 9:45 AM ET, along with a handful of earnings reports morning and evening.
Among the top components of the index, Tesla Inc (NASDAQ: TSLA) emerged as the biggest gainer. The AI/EV company advanced by $4.56 or 1.14% to close at $405.05 for the day.
That performance was over 1% better than the cash index’s decline of 0.31%.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Alphabet Inc (NASDAQ: GOOG). For the day, the tech giant declined by $18.68 or 5.08% to close at $348.78.
