Thursday delivered an unusual session in the S&P 500 index futures, as Friday’s holiday pushed the triple-witching options expiration forward a day, and once the chop and whipsaw settled, bulls pulled away with a decent victory.

Wednesday evening, bulls extended the after-hours rally off a low of 7504.25 up to the 7550 area, holding entirely in the green. After oscillating around that zone overnight, market participants geared up for a volatile open with options set to expire. Just before the bell, bulls rallied to new highs, but once the regular session commenced, profit-takers and other sellers hit right back, hard.

Support was found above the daily pivot, and bulls built a base of bids from there. The action turned to chop, remaining mostly in the same area as the opening range. The chop settled somewhat in the afternoon, yet the rollercoaster for market participants continued. In the final half hour, bulls found support once again at 7550 and mounted a rally toward the highs from there. The session concluded near the day’s high at 7570.75, gaining a decent 78 handles. For the week, that makes for a gain of 73.25 handles, or 0.98%. After hours, the day’s high was nudged up to 7583.

Monday, market participants can look forward to a small handful of earnings reports in the morning and evening.

Among the top components of the index, Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO) emerged as the biggest gainer for the second day in a row. The chip designer advanced by $18.45 or 4.70% to close at $411.35 for the day.

That performance was over four times better than the cash index’s advance of 1.04%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT). For the day, the retail giant declined by $0.95 or 0.80% to close at $117.18.
