The S&P 500 index futures ended Friday’s session with its familiar propensity to finish the week near the extreme end of the range, while delivering plenty of chop to close out the month.
Overnight action stayed relatively muted, oscillating around unchanged with a low of 7572.75. The regular session opened in the green, and bulls wasted no time launching a sharp rally that reached a new all-time high of 7611.50. Resistance held firm in that zone, and profit-takers quickly reversed the morning surge.
Bears pressed down toward unchanged before bulls sparked back to life after a Trump post signaling progress in the Iran situation, noting a meeting today for a final determination. That news helped trigger more volatility as bulls attempted a rebound. For the rest of the morning, the index chopped around the psychological 7600 level. Sellers drove it back down to test Thursday’s close in the afternoon, but bulls defended that support multiple times and began tacking on gains in the final hour.
Just as it looked like the session would settle in the 7600 handle, sellers struck in the final minutes to trim some profits. The session concluded at a new all-time closing high near the day’s midpoint at 7595.75, gaining 14 handles. For the week, that marks a healthy gain of 104.75 handles or 1.40%. For the month, the index posted a strong advance of 352 handles or 4.86%.
Monday, market participants can look forward to some May manufacturing data after the open and a few earnings reports in the morning, with more expected in the evening.
Among the top components of the index, Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT) emerged as the biggest gainer for the second day in a row. The tech giant advanced by $23.25 or 5.45% to close at $450.24 for the day.
That performance was over 21 times better than the cash index’s advance of 0.25 percent.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Walmart Inc (NYSE: WMT). For the day, the retail giant declined by $3.15 or 2.65% to close at $115.75.
