It seems any positive geopolitical news was all it took for the S&P 500 index futures to rocket to new all-time highs during Thursday’s session.
Overnight, bears held the reins early, driving the index down to a low of 7505.75 before bulls stepped in to find support. Buy-the-dippers took advantage, lifting the index back near unchanged by the regular session open. After the bell, a few early sellers were swiftly taken out.
Reports that the US and Iran had reached a deal needing only Trump’s final approval helped spark a powerful bull surge, rocketing the index from unchanged straight to the previous all-time high double-top. Profit-takers trimmed some of the immediate gains, but after a brief consolidation, bulls seized control again and pushed to fresh highs. The rally slowed in the afternoon but continued marching higher virtually until the close.
The session concluded at another new all-time closing high of 7581.75, gaining 41.75 handles. After hours, positive earnings reactions pushed the all-time high even further to 7590.75.
Friday, market participants can look forward to April’s PCE index report, the second revision of Q1 GDP, and a few other macro data points all at 8:30 AM ET, along with a few earnings reports in the morning.
Among the top components of the index, Microsoft Corp (NASDAQ: MSFT) emerged as the biggest gainer. The tech giant advanced by $14.32 or 3.47% to close at $426.99 for the day.
That performance was a significant six times better than the cash index’s advance of 0.55 percent.
Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE: BRK.B). For the day, the holding company declined by $2.56 or 0.53% to close at $477.42.
