Wednesday’s S&P 500 index futures had a choppy session as more earnings reports hit the tape and traders speculated the ceasefire could stretch on for a long time.

Overnight, bulls kept the index futures entirely in the green, marking the low at 7121.25 and maintaining a modest uplift until morning. Chop intensified as the regular session began, but bulls were able to maintain higher bids. Resistance came in near last week’s close, giving bears a chance to rule the chop, though there wasn’t any sustained movement in either direction.

Support was found near Monday’s close, and the bulls started to turn the tide in the afternoon. The chop continued until the final minutes, when bulls pushed to a new high of 7173 just before the close. The session concluded at a new all-time closing high of 7171.25, gaining 71.25 handles.

Tomorrow, market participants can look forward to April’s S&P flash U.S. services data at 9:45 AM ET, along with another load of earnings reports before and after regular session hours.

Among the top components of the index, Broadcom Inc (NASDAQ: AVGO) emerged as the biggest gainer. The chip designer was able to advance by $20.48 or 5.09% to close at $422.65 for the day, marking new all-time highs after reports of expanded collaboration with Google Cloud.

That performance was a fabulous 5 times better than the cash index’s advance of 1.01%.

Conversely, the biggest loser ended up being Berkshire Hathaway Inc (NYSE: BRK.B). For the day, the holding company declined by $2.97 or 0.63% to close at $465.40.
